Grammy-award winning Tom Jones proved once again why he is and always will be an enduring legend of the music world with his headlining performance at this years’ Byron Bay Bluesfest. Despite singing about the passage of time and coming to terms with growing old, Jones brought an infectious energy and enthusiasm to the stage that belied his age. Anyone doubting can hear as Tom Jones does Americana via his influences of Gospel, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash.
As he sang classics like “It’s Not Unusual” and “Delilah,” as well as lesser-known gems like “Talking Reality Television Blues,” Jones breathed new life into each song, infusing them with his trademark unique vocals and passion. And when he threw surprises in, like joining forces on stage with The Blind Boys of Alabama for “Run On” and “Didn’t It Rain,” the result was nothing short of magical.
The Blind Boys of Alabama have had an ever-revolving line-up since forming in 1939 and are still a huge draw everywhere they perform.
Touring down under the same time as Tom, the Welshman invited the world’s longest running group to perform with him on a few songs during his headline set.
The audience hung on his every word and note, living for each moment of his performance. And while Jones may joke about his age, as evidenced by his quip about attending Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday when he’s “only 83!” there’s no denying he remains a force to be reckoned with on stage.
He might be 83, but Tom Jones proved he’s lost none of his vocal power when he teamed up with renowned gospel group The Blind Boys Of Alabama for a stunning rehearsal backstage at a music festival in Australia.
